What nightmares are made of
She closed her eyes, a small smile playing on her lips. The memory of the first time she had seen her husband wafted through the air, engulfing her in nostalgia.
She grinned again and sighed in wonderful contentment. She could not wait for him to get home so that they could celebrate their first anniversary.
Getting up, she rearranged the candles which decorated the dinner table and she allowed her mind to wander to the day her eyes fell upon her soulmate.
She had been sitting with her group of friends at the local coffee shop. Unlike her friends, she was quiet, reserved. As the conversation progressed, her thoughts drifted and her eyes met his. He was walking into the aroma filled coffee shop and his eyes scanned the crowd. She caught his eye as his gaze paused for a few seconds.
His eyes seemed dark, she could not make out the colour and his hair was as black as night. It sat lazily on his head, as if he had just rolled out of bed and carelessly ran his fingers through his hair. The light stubble that sat on his perfectly shaped jaw enhanced his handsome features. He was tall and well built. Not too large, nor too small. He wore a black shirt which highlighted his muscular body. He was the definition of perfection in its human form.
The bellow of his friends broke him out of his reverie and his gaze shifted to the loud group as they called out his name.
She was completely mesmerized by the unknown stranger. The beat in her heart quickened as she continued to stare at him absentmindedly.
The click of perfectly manicured fingers interrupted her unbroken stare and she started.
"What's gotten into you?" her friend asked.
"Nothing," she replied as she took a sip of the white chocolate mocha cappuccino that sat in front of her.
She felt an attraction to him, an invisible pull that demanded her attention. She tried hard not to look at him again but her eyes strayed. And that's when she saw it, he was staring at her too. His gaze ever so intense, demanded her attention and her quickened heartbeat.
And when he eventually spoke to her, his rich voice sounded velvety, stroking her ears with the perfection it enunciated. She was intrigued, captured.
The shrill ring of her phone broke her out of her reverie. She lazily answered it, almost uninterested. But the worried voice on the other end stole her attention. Her grip tightened on the phone and her breathing shallowed and her heartbeat quickened. The pounding rang through her entire body, reverberating throughout her being.
The pace of her heart quickened, threatening to explode any second.
She felt her soul shatter in a stinging array of shrapnels, ripping her reality with restlessness.
No. No. It couldn't be. It shouldn't be.
But it was. Her husband had met up in an accident.
And he was dead.
Her heart screamed in unequivocal pain and she woke up with a start, the incessant pounding refusing to cease.
She curled up next to her husband, grabbing him with an unmatched fervour.
“It was just a dream,” she whispered. “A horrible nightmare.”
